As a long-time resident of our beautiful Coast, I was shocked by the amount of underfunding that Sechelt Library is receiving. The library is a critical component in making Sechelt the kind of community where I have chosen to reside. Kudos to the friendly and helpful staff who continue to offer support to our community in spite of serious shortages in funding and increasing demands on their time. We have the opportunity to make our library a pivotal location for enlightenment with updated technology, full-time tech support, enlarged children’s programming in a cozy child friendly atmosphere, enhanced adult programming, and informative speakers. We deserve to have an inspiring hub for continued learning and discussion, which is the intent and function of libraries.
As the mayor stated, we also want parks. Yes, but natural beauty we have in abundance, with most of us being volunteer stewards. Sechelt has but one library, which needs increased funding in order to stay relevant in today’s world and offer stimulation to our community.
I sincerely hope the mayor and council will take this into consideration prior to the suggested 2019 date. We need more forward thinking. We deserve more funding for our library.
I will be supporting our library on Oct. 28 at a fundraising gourmet dinner and silent auction being held at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club. I hope many others will show their support also.
