Editor:
For those interested in some fanciful summer reading, look no further than Mat Wilson’s “Old school politics” letter in Coast Reporter, July 14.
In the thigh-slapper category, Wilson spins a tale of how the Liberals, under the spell of their recently deposed leader Christy Clark, sincerely offered B.C. citizens and their political opponents an opportunity to unite with them in repealing political donations. But the hard-hearted, evil opponents of democracy (the NDP and Greens) spurned the offer and thus defeated the true champions of accountable government, the Liberals.
Wilson goes on to say the Throne Speech offer was the first time he “witnessed a government humbly set aside political ideology.”
Where have you been, Mat? I guess you missed the five or six times during the reign of Queen Christy when the NDP advocated on behalf of banning such donations, only to be utterly ignored by the sitting Liberals. And it’s always been a plank of the Green platform.
There isn’t a pundit in the land, and very few B.C. citizens, who haven’t identified the Throne Speech, and the Liberal offer to which you refer, as an 11th-hour “Hail Christy” pass to cling to power. It was a mind-bending and utterly cynical ploy, the likes of which would be right at home in a Game of Thrones sub-plot.
Thanks for the laughs, Mat. I can’t wait for sequel.
