On highway hazards

Letters

Editor:

In response to G. Orbell’s June 7 letter stating the “highway is too hazardous” to bike on the Sunshine Coast:

Transportation Choices Sunshine Coast, a member-based group advocating for alternatives to single occupancy car use and organizers of Active Transportation Month, strongly agree that road maintenance and infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast requires significant improvements. We are constantly advocating for improvements at both the local and provincial level. However, depending on your route, there are still many roads with adequate road shoulders that can be used for cycling. Most cycling accidents occur at intersections. Our advice is to ride where you feel comfortable and take extra care at the intersections. We also encourage you to write Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena to ask for improvements to our cycling infrastructure.

Enjoy riding your bike!
