Letters: Let us choose how we use our water on the Coast

Reflection in well water

Editor:

Eureka! The water restrictions imposed by the SCRD are a source of frustration for many of us. While I understand the seriousness of our situation during drought, I believe that individual households should be allowed to make their own decisions on how they want to use their water.

I propose a system whereby every household is allotted a feasible amount of water each month based on the number of full-time residents. This allowance can be used for any purpose, and households that exceed their allowance would be charged for each additional litre of water used. This would help to conserve water while also allowing residents to decide what is most important to them. For example, someone who values a vegetable garden might choose to water their plants but limit themselves to fewer showers or loads of laundry.

While it is important for the SCRD to continue working towards a long-term solution for our water problem with their multitiered approach, this system could be a useful way to manage water more fairly and encourage conservation in the short term.
