Letters: An indoor place to 'just be a human' – why libraries need to grow with community

'Why were all the community partners’ funding requests sent as presented to the next round of budget discussions, except for that of the Sechelt and Gibsons libraries? Why is funding for the one public service that is for everyone in this community regardless of status or income not being allowed to grow along with the community?'

Editor:

Do you know that there is one indoor place on the Coast where you don’t have to be a customer or a client but can just be a human? It’s the public library. The books are free. The internet is free. The workshops, performances and community gatherings are free. And everybody of all ages, no matter what you look like or sound like, or how much money you have or property you own, everybody is welcome. So why were all the community partners’ funding requests sent as presented to the next round of budget discussions, except for that of the Sechelt and Gibsons libraries? Why is funding for the one public service that is for everyone in this community regardless of status or income not being allowed to grow along with the community? We all need to support our public libraries and let them grow with us.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Vance, Gibsons
