Letters: A few long-term care Coast capacity concerns

This new care home is to open in January. It has 128 beds. Looks like a great facility (“New long-term care centre to open in January,” Dec. 1).

Just a few wee concerns. We have one of the oldest demographics in B.C. We keep growing the population and a high proportion of “incomers” are retirees. What spare capacity has VCH built into this project? What does VCH see as our future needs (numbers please and not just good words)? How many patients will be moving in from Shorncliffe, Totem and the hospital? How many are on current waiting lists? Can I book my room now?!! The U.K. has experienced major problems in care homes following the transfer of all facilities to the private sector.

Hopefully, long term, the same will not happen here.
