Letter: Sunshine Coast, if you don't respect the oil recycling rules, the service will end

Oil recycling 4 - web

Editor:

I work for a company here in Sechelt that has been here for decades. We provide a voluntary specific service to our customers and the public at our discretion.

The public are allowed to drop off used oil, used oil filters and anti-freeze here at our facility but only during our business hours Monday to Friday 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Not before or after and not on weekends.

We do not accept anything other than clean used oil and antifreeze and not mixed together.

You must come in and sign the register sheet and one of our friendly staff will assist you in checking and dumping, and you must stay for the duration.

Our signs specifically instruct people not to drop off after hours and that deliberately abandoning or dumping any waste anywhere on our property is illegal under the Environmental Management Act and is subject to a $1,000 fine or up to six months in jail for doing so.

We restarted this program in February of this year after a time of abuse.

People had been dropping products after hours and some was contaminated. Please do not leave them here. We cannot recycle these products.

If people continue to abuse the service and our good nature, we will be forced to shut it down.

So in conclusion, please recycle responsibly. Please also note that you are on camera.

Thank you,

C. Pogson, Columbia Fuels
