Letter: More than ‘commercial' STRs, we’re your neighbours

Please don’t call us “commercial.” We are members of your community.

Yes, we do rent our house out to tourists. But we also host your family when they visit the Coast, but don’t want to stay at hotel. We let our place out to Locum Obstetricians that deliver new family members. We also rent to companies that bring workers to build new houses for our community and new professionals that now work here.

We don’t feel like “commercial” hotel operators. Our guests are usually young families, many with young kids. Would you guess that about 50 per cent are from diverse communities? We’ve never had a “party.” Never a complaint. Met a lot of great people. Oh, and of course we use our house for our visiting friends and family too.

All of the fellow “commercial” hosts we know have strong ties to the community. Most live quite close to their ST rental homes. Others own to enable a move here when they retire here. All love the Sunshine Coast and respect the values of our community.

It hurts us to be lumped in with disruptive party houses as something to sweep away. We are licensed, insured, and complying with all the rules.

We are much more than “commercial.”

Call us neighbours.
