The turnout for the information meeting put on by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) in Sechelt this past Monday showed the community’s passionate commitment to create residential care facilities that meet our needs, now and into the future. And we do need them – just not the way VCH proposed.
It’s not clear how this fiasco can be fixed. VCH confirmed that they have signed a legally binding contract with Trellis Seniors Services to build, own and operate the Silverstone project, on the Silverstone site. VCH senior staff might be open to a rethink, but is Trellis?
Let’s ask Trellis directly – at the information meeting that Trellis has planned for Monday, Sept. 19, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Sechelt Legion. As applicants for a rezoning bylaw, Trellis must provide the District of Sechelt with evidence of community consultation and support. Approval by Sechelt council is not a given, contract or no contract.
Bring your best ideas, and be prepared for some hard work over the next few months, as we try to sort out this mess. Come early if you want to be sure of a seat.
