Kudos to our fine ferry crews

I have difficulty walking and was worried how I'd manage when my husband and I travelled as foot passengers from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay and then on to Nanaimo on Feb. 18.

After the hike from the parking lot onto the ferry at Langdale, I went to the chief steward's office to enquire whether we could purchase tickets for the second leg of our trip.

Not only did she give us the tickets on the spot, she promptly wheeled out a wheelchair for my use and made arrangements for our luggage to be transferred to the other ferry, so my husband didn't have to trot all the way down to the ticket booth and back again. The ferry staff were most helpful and unfailingly cheerful at every turn, helping the wheelchair over rough patches and allowing us to board before the crowd.

This wonderful assistance continued on the return trip on Feb. 22, when I phoned the night before and the wheelchair was waiting for me at the ticket office at Departure Bay. Again, we were allowed to board before the crowd, and every assistance was offered. And all this at a very busy time - during the Olympics.

I have travelled quite often and have never found such excellent service in any airport on this continent or in Europe.
