How many more deaths?

Letters

Editor:

This letter was sent to Transportation Minister Claire Trevena and other officials.

You may recall that a group of neighbours living on or near Largo Road in Roberts Creek campaigned hard in 2018 and 2019 to make sure that Largo Road was not made a through road when a new subdivision went in on Largo. We said at the time that lives would be lost.

On May 26, at about 5:30 p.m., a young motorcyclist was killed when he hit a car attempting a left turn off Largo onto the highway. While we don’t yet know what factors were involved in this death, it seems clear enough that if Largo was not a through road providing access to the highway, this death would not have happened.

You already know from your own metrics that nearby Flume Road is a dangerous intersection where it comes onto the highway, so much so that buses will no longer use it. The highway is a cow path from Sechelt to Gibsons that has been minimally upgraded. There are too many cars and trucks using it. Why oh why would you add another dangerous intersection at Largo?

I am writing to demand that you put up bollards or whatever it takes to once again make Largo not a through road from Lower Road to the highway. One death so far. How many will it take?

Jane Covernton, Roberts Creek
