I want to express my support for the reinstating of shíshálh names for local geographical locations, including salalus, ts’ukw’um, and skelhp. I have not yet written or officially expressed my support before today because, truthfully, I didn’t think the decision was one I (as a non-Indigenous Sunshine Coaster) had a right to weigh in on. It seemed like the opinion that mattered in this case was that of the shíshálh Nation, who made their position clear with their request for the name change.
However, the indignant response I have seen expressed by some community members has made me realize that I do need to express my support, not because I need to have a say but because my silence could be interpreted as indifference. I fully support the change. I like the names and I look forward to using them, but more importantly it feels just and respectful to honour the request the shíshálh Nation has made. I hope the SCRD and the Geographical Names Office agree.
