High-rise in Sechelt

Letters

Editor:

Two years ago, a development for assisted and/or independent living for seniors was introduced by Spani Construction. It was very much welcomed, not only because of the urgent need for such residences in Sechelt, but especially because it would be built by a company known for its high quality and timely construction.

However, the two six-and-a-half-storey towers were of concern because of their height. After being initially approved, the developer changed the design to build a huge apartment-type building with eight-and-a-half storeys. Such an increase has not gone well with many local residents, who don’t appreciate a structure high above Sechelt, reaching above the roofs of the adjacent Chatelech high school. The assurance given by one councillor, as quoted in the press – that this will not be “the height of buildings in Sechelt going forward” but “is a one-off” – seems short-sighted. Such a statement fits well at this time, but future community leaders could look at such a development as a precedent. This has happened to communities along the Mission-Vancouver railway connection.

It appears no consideration has been given to the sea elevation of the property, making it eight-and-a-half times above Sechelt proper (44 metres/145 feet).

When adding this to the building height (25 metres/82 feet), this will result in a total height of 69 metres/228 feet towering over Sechelt and surrounding areas – a high-rise type design more suited for a city, not a small village.

I would very much wish that an understanding for a scaled-down design could be reached with the developer, who has such a stellar reputation. I also believe the right decision is owed to our village character, its residents and future generations.
