Herbicides not welcome

I was dismayed to see a notice in your paper that the province was planning to use a variety of herbicides on the Coast. Twenty-five years ago a group of folks stopped the use of herbicide in the forest above Roberts Creek, we sent the company and their poison back to where they came from and have not seen them since, until recently under the guise of eradicating invasive plants. The poison people are back this time with a bunch of new recruits who have fallen for the “dangers of knotweed and how it is a health hazard or it will ruin your home and property values.”

The SCRD used to have a policy of no herbicide use, but sadly several years ago caved in to the poison people’s recruits and have allowed and funded the use of herbicide. I have a question for all of the folks on the invasive plant eradication bandwagon: Are there not way more important programs that need funding and resources in our community? I recently read a full-colour glossy brochure put out by the Sunshine Coast invasive plant eradication group. Full of scare tactics about property value and damage to homes and how it’s the law in B.C. Pure cleverly disguised greenwash from a herbicide company’s PR office.
