The community gathering to honour the memory of the two marine rescue volunteers whose lives came to a sudden end in the rushing waters of the Skookumchuck was memorable in every way and those who participated did so with dignity and sensitivity.
For me, though, the most remarkablemoments were at theconclusion of the ceremony. Then, in utter silence, the huge crowdfiled out one by onebetween twocolumns ofthose I am learning to call "first responders." They stood shoulder to shoulder - marine rescuers, paramedics, fire fighters, police officers, search and rescue crews, military personnel -andit seemed as if thetwo linesstretched on forever. I realizedthat they and their organizations are always standing silentlyaround us. Each of themis committed - like Beatrice and Angie -to risking life and limbfor people like me.
I hope I never forget that. I hope they know how grateful I am.
