Governing in a bubble

I feel a need to get a few things off my chest before I go back to pretending all is well with government.

1. School board’s eight per cent increase. Thank you, Lori Dixon and Greg Russell. As for the rest of you, I’m at a loss. You talk about leadership, need to keep costs under control, etc. Reality check: leaders lead by example. Your do as I say not as I do attitude is a slap in the face to taxpayers and SD46 employees. I know a lot of people who have not had a raise in years. The difference – whether justified or not – we can’t vote ourselves a raise.

2. Sechelt wastewater plant. If I didn’t know better, I would think they served crow and humble pie at the ceremony in Ottawa, judging by the look on Mayor Milne’s face. I know I’m not the only one who finds it hypocritical that the mayor (and some members of council) bad-mouthed the project and wasted taxpayer dollars on a witch hunt, then had the audacity to show up at an awards ceremony accepting an award for something he campaigned against. I’m guessing either municipal or federal tax dollars paid for that trip. Then there’s the whole green campaign; let me guess – he flew there. Declining the invitation, maybe attending by video, not an option?

3. As for Mayor Milne’s verbose comments in last week’s letters section regarding the info centre (and his less than subtle remarks about the Chamber) – I may not be a member of the Chamber, but I do know they want this community to thrive. His comment about the info centre serving business and tourists is laughable. I’m left wondering if he has any idea what the Chamber is about.

Do these people live in a bubble? Their attitude is what’s wrong with this country.
