More deer around the Mahan Trail have attracted a cougar that killed pets and livestock and worried local residents (Coast Reporter, Feb. 5).
As a biologist, I believe this ecological shift is the result of erecting a fence around the Gospel Rock property. Ostensibly, the fence was built to remove the owners' liability from our casual use of the area. Unfortunately for us, this phantom excuse has real-world consequences that will persist as long as the fence remains.
