Re: “Greens eye returning BC Ferries to government fold,” Oct. 23.
Here we go again. Les Leyne essentially trots out the same old argument that we’ve heard so many times before – “If you choose to live in a ferry dependent community, pay for your own ferries.” First of all, it doesn’t matter where you live, it has always been your choice. Secondly, the $1.4-billion ferry debt is peanuts compared to the tens of billions of dollars the province has poured into Lower Mainland infrastructure projects. He tells us, in effect, that Lower Mainland residents happily take B.C.’s tax money, which includes that from ferry-dependent communities, but are unwilling to return the favour for our traffic needs. I would like to ask him, what benefit has come to Nanaimo or Dawson Creek from the SkyTrain network? How has Victoria or Prince George benefitted from the new Port Mann Bridge? Ultimately, I like to pay back the same argument: “If you choose to live on the wrong side of the river, pay for your own bridges.”
