Editor:
I recently read in Sechelt briefs (Coast Reporter, Oct. 4) that Coun. Doug Hockley is against granting churches tax exemption.
This issue has been discussed in Gibsons as well and I am sure is an annual discussion in most municipalities.
Hockley's concern was the support of the religions regardless of whether you attend them or believe in them. I would like to offer an alternate point of view.
Regardless of denomination, churches on the Sunshine Coast provide so much more than succour for the faithful. When considering the cultural practices of our society such as fall fairs and funerals, shelter for the homeless and weddings, concerts and care groups, one can see that the community would be a lot worse off if not for churches.
Not all taxpayers who support schools have children in attendance, but we do see the value of supporting education.
Please expand your narrow focus Mr. Hockley, and acknowledge that the churches offer more to the community than just a place for the religious to worship.
