Thanks to Coast Reporter for outlining the rationale for the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s change in their community engagement process – essentially that they are going to end most of their long-standing advisory committee programs and move to gathering community input differently.

As the most recent chair of the recreation and parks advisory committee, I would like to thank the various members of all the advisory committees who devoted countless volunteer hours of their expertise to identifying community issues and suggesting solutions to staff and board members that would work best for the Sunshine Coast.

Our work over four years as the designated steering committee for the development of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan was an example of the value-added contribution that these volunteers brought to the table. This input resulted in an excellent 10-year master plan that is now guiding the board and staff’s present and future decision making. We are proud of our contribution.

In light of this change, please take every opportunity to participate in whatever processes will be put in place. Imminent costly recreation and parks decisions will have to be made and they will involve your tax dollars. Your voice counts.
