Mr. Hamilton's tirade (Coast Reporter, letters, April 27) against the lady who defeated the latest Target Marine rezoning application, suggests that his sole concern is tawdry economics. He should not allow himself to be persuaded that something is right simply because 81 per cent of misinformed Sechelt voters believe it to be so. Remember your history. Thirty years ago Prime Minister Trudeau's Charter of Rights and Freedoms was enacted to protect individual rights against mob rule, which a lot of people confuse with "democracy."

Prior to that charter we had Japanese internment and we had First Nations children forced into residential schools. All of this may have been done with the blessing of the majority of Canadians, but that did not make it right.

Economics does not trump individual rights. The lady referred to in Mr. Hamilton's letter has been battling Target Marine on the basis of her rights. And she's fighting for the rights of every Sechelt resident who is concerned about spot rezoning of industrial operations in a residential neighbourhood. She has been very courageous in this battle, knowing that a majority of the residents of Sechelt are opposed to her. Your letter that vilifies her is cowardly bullying.
