There are many wonderful examples of dedicated people working together to bring dreams to reality.
The isolated community of the Sunshine Coast wanted an arena in the Gibsons area, over 10 years ago. With a proven model to work from, the core group went to the public with a case for support. The property tax payers, noting that their tax dollars would be handled with prudence, strongly supported the referendum with a turnout of 48 per cent, giving a yes vote that averaged 68 per cent.
The donations then flowed in to bring the ice-based community centre to reality. There have been many successes in the use of this great facility. The most recent one was the 2016 Midget Tier 3 BC Championship, which kicked off March 13. The games continued throughout the week until March 17.
The games were organized by the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association. It was estimated that about 12,000 people went through the arena.
A very successful businessman from Wilson Creek was there and he enthusiastically stated that it was standing room only. Another successful retired businessman was there supporting his grandson.
From a family/friendship point of view, the experience was wonderful and will be remembered for a long time. Looking at the economic impacts: the motels were all booked, the restaurants were full, and the multiplier effect was terrific.
All this shows what dedicated people can achieve given the right environment and support.
