Don't dip into reserves

Sechelt council has voted to pave the top end of Mason, Heritage and Sandpiper roads(Coast Reporter, June 8). They have allocated $625K; however, this figure could grow significantly if council has to reroute that part of Mason that now crosses privately owned property or compensate the landowners.

This is all a bit odd.

A public meeting was held in West Sechelt a couple of years ago to consider options for a new West Sechelt to Sechelt connector road and one that could relieve pressure on Highway 101. I suggested Mason as an option. I was told that Mason was not viable as "the District did not want increased levels of traffic on Reef and Trail. The road now is only lightly used and the costs would be far too high."

Seems to me that those arguments still apply.

There has been no demand from the public for this work to be done. If those councillors who voted for this scheme win the day I do hope they do not dip into reserves to finance the project.
