We are fortunate to live where we do in these COVID times – no community transmission of the virus to date, lots of outdoor spaces where the virus effect is reduced, and kind, caring community members that follow the guidelines to keep us all safe.
Now that the wearing of masks is picking up traction, the issue of disposal of masks and gloves ought to be addressed. We do not want to see masks and gloves joining the ubiquitous take-away beverage containers and dog waste bags full of poop being discarded in parking lots, hanging on bushes and by the side of the road. Let’s keep our beautiful community free of these litter items now that masks are mandatory on transit, ferries, many businesses and health-care settings, and some major food markets in Canada. Finding a cloth mask that has a bridge of the nose fitting capability is key to reducing waste and ensuring that masks are used as intended; not touching your face to adjust your mask.
I work in health care and I am impressed with how adaptable children are to wearing masks effectively. Wearing a mask sends a message of caring about the people you come in contact with in the community. Thank you, Sunshine Coasters, for your uptake on the use of PPE and properly disposing of it.
