Re: “Herbicide to be used on Coast” (Feb. 26).
I was disheartened to read that MOTI & BC Hydro intend to apply a chemical product currently classified by the International Agency on Research for Cancer as a “probable cause of cancer.”
Who among us would knowingly expose anybody to a probable cause of cancer? Wouldn’t simple common sense dictate that it’s not OK to apply a probable carcinogen in our community?
The only organization that says Roundup is “safe” is the biotech giant that owns the patent. Monsanto’s Roundup is the most widely used agricultural chemical of all time. It’s no wonder Monsanto spends millions to convince us it’s safe. In my books, a product classified as a “possible carcinogen” is not “safe.”
Roundup is being sprayed freely year round by our neighbours for residential weed control. Although curiously not found in locally owned nursery or garden shops, you can buy a jug from local chain hardware stores anytime.
For those of us who don’t want any probable carcinogens used in our community, I suggest the following: educate ourselves; stop using Roundup; ask local retailers to stop selling Roundup; lobby for a Coast-wide ban on the sale of Roundup; join your neighbours and millions around the globe in the annual March Against Monsanto.
