Disappointed in board discussion

I attended the Oct. 10 Sunshine Coast Regional District meeting where the issue of recent logging in the Chapman Creek drinking watershed was the first item on the agenda due to its emergency nature.

With regional municipal elections coming up, I was interested to see how board members would address this hot topic. I’m sad to report that for the most part, it appeared as if the board was discussing a noise bylaw complaint. Nobody got too excited; one director said the company (Surespan) was following all the rules.

One board member, who showed some character, was director Lee Turnbull who rightfully raised the point that the SCRD has been here before; addressing watershed logging and something has to change. One of the main services the SCRD provides is clean, potable water to residents.

It’s time to elect an individual who understands the conditions and history in our drinking watershed, and who will be pro-active in its long-term protection.
