Deer on the road

Letters

Editor:

I am a person who enjoys long walks, and last week I had the misfortune to encounter two dead deer, on two different occasions, in ditches at the roadside. One was obviously a fresh kill – its distressed mate was running back and forth beside the body. The other one had been there for a while, in the summer heat, and I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

I have two points to make here – first of all, slow down and drive with awareness. These beautiful creatures are everywhere, often accompanied by their young, and they do not understand the rules of the road. If you see one, assume there are others. They travel in groups. And if you do hit one, follow up. Call Capilano Highway Services at 604-740-0667. They will come and get the remains. Don’t leave it for somebody else to make the call when they discover the mess three days later.
