Crosswalks not trivial

Letters

Editor:

Traffic lights are traffic lights, stop signs are stop signs and crosswalks are crosswalks, not rainbow walks. All over the world that is the standard on our roads in order to keep them safe. Neglecting to obey these signs can result in a ticket or worse. So this is not a frivolous or trivial matter. Our LGBT community, which I am generally supportive of, should celebrate and parade, fly the rainbow flag and fight for their rights in the court of public opinion. But changing official pavement markings is not an appropriate way to promote anybody’s cause.

Whoever it was that whitewashed the crosswalks may not, in my opinion, have been a vandal. Nothing was damaged. It was replaced with a replica of the original crosswalk. That may have simply been a political statement, as is the rainbow alteration to the crosswalks.

The white stripes on the crosswalks are there for a reason, so they can be clearly seen, day or night, by both drivers and pedestrians. I, for one, hope the Town puts the crosswalks back the way they were. After all, our streets are public property and don’t belong to any particular segment of the population.
