Fireworks are fun. They are community-building. They can be enjoyed while being socially-distant. Let’s not split hairs on the negative environmental costs of fireworks. We all use a fuel-burning ferry to travel to and from our pulp mill-supported town. Plastics still exist. Being alive today has an inherent carbon cost, and while we work on that, can we still just live a little?
Personally, I’m grateful for whichever neighbour on Shaw Road put on a great “illicit” Halloween display this year. It made up for our loss of hundreds of trick-or-treaters. 2020 has been lame enough. Moving forward, could Gibsons please avoid squashing the simple seasonal pleasure fireworks bring? Certain elected officials need some community perspective – and maybe some earplugs.
