Burnout mania dangerous

Letters

Editor:

Mike Shanks is right (“Downside of burnouts,” Letters, Aug. 23). The burnout mania that was encouraged by some bystanders between Mason Road and Wakefield at this year’s Rod Run was reckless and exceptionally dangerous. The safest location for flexing the back tires of any Rod Run entry is up at the airport. The Sunshine Coast Highway with vehicles coming in the opposite direction is not the place to show off to the roadside crowds. One blown tire and that vehicle is going to be in the midst of the onlookers, causing injuries. Other than the ear-splitting noise, there’s the clouds of carcinogens being inhaled by onlookers of all ages.

This year’s Rod Run was too broken up with long gaps between the entries and these gaps were created by the burnout grandstanding drivers that were risking the future of the Rod Run. With all the increased east-west tourist traffic I think it is time to think about a different route for the 25th anniversary. The RCMP should consider setting up in the Mason and Wakefield road area next year to dampen the drivers that are ruining the reputation of the Coasters Car Club.
