This is a plea to parents to please educate your children about bicycle and pedestrian safety.

I walk a lot, particularly in the mornings at a time when children are riding their bikes to school, and it is a rare morning that I do not have at least one near collision with a child on a bicycle. One of the nice things about cycling is the silence; however, this also means that pedestrians cannot hear a cyclist approaching from behind them. Some of those close calls have involved a narrow shoulder, cars coming in both directions and a cyclist whizzing past, with no warning, between myself and an on-coming vehicle whose driver has no place to go.

One unexpected move from me (and I don't always walk a straight line) would cause a collision that could put the cyclist in the path of a vehicle as well as injuring myself. I am sure I am not the only pedestrian to experience this.

Please make sure your child's bike has a bell and they know when and why to use it. Adult cyclists need to be aware of this too.
