This is in response to the article in the Oct. 16 paper headlined “Gibsons mayor promises action on barges,” accompanied by an expansive picture view of a barge and flotilla of kayaks. The picture looks like it was taken from the deck of one of the high-end abodes on the bluff.
No action is needed by the mayor or anyone else. The Gibsons harbour is a working place as well as a recreation base. These barges are a local economic asset, a source of service and employment.
I am on the water there regularly in my rowboat and see no navigation hazard whatsoever from the barges.
This is not a navigation problem; it is a view-taste proposition. On this coast there are many places where pristine yacht-clubby marina views are available, but not necessarily here, at the Gibsons harbour. Some people “from away” don’t get this.
