Editor:
I have fielded some questions from seniors and families on the Coast regarding advanced foot care for seniors with serious medical conditions.
It has come to my attention that there are people advertising themselves as “certified advanced foot care nurse” without the proper credentials.
There is no such thing as a certifying body. However, any “advanced foot care nurse” needs to be registered with either the college of Registered Nurses of British Columbia or the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia, as well as having the proper specialty diploma. RNs can work independently, but LPNs need to work under the direction of the family physician.
Most people do not need a specialist and feet can be looked after by untrained persons. Any senior with conditions such as diabetes and conditions/medications such as anti-coagulant therapy should be seen by a professional.
Any agency offering these services is responsible to ensure that staff are properly trained and under the protection of the Health Professions Act.
I am an RN practitioner with a large practice and my intent with this letter is for public information. Feel free to ask your nurse about qualifications.
