A life so tragically lost

Letters

Editor:

Why must it take a death to make a change? We’re not referring to the tragedy that’s unfolding south of the border, but rather here in our “backyard” at the intersection of Largo Road and Highway 101.

On May 26, a 22-year-old man riding a motorcycle was killed at this intersection when he collided with a vehicle entering the highway. The actual cause of the accident is under investigation; however, as a homeowner on Largo Road, the accident came as a shock, but certainly not a surprise.

Over a year ago, the residents of Largo Road and surrounding area met with representatives of MOTI (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure) to discuss the impact that the proposed Largo through-road connection would have on the neighbourhood. We voiced our concerns about the highway intersection, but were told categorically that sightlines were good and there was no need for a turning lane, traffic lights, etc. The only concession MOTI was willing to give was that the apron (asphalt connection) from the highway to the gravel surface of Largo Road was to be increased in size and have a reduced gradient, to allow for better acceleration on to the highway. This was never done!

A few days ago, a group of us stood next to the flowers and memorabilia placed at the accident site, paying homage to a life so tragically lost. In the short time we were there, numerous cars sped by, including an illegal overtaking manoeuvre, all while two cars attempted to enter the highway from Largo Road.

How many more deaths and serious accidents will there need to be before there is a change?
