Trail Avenue work to begin Dec. 9

The District of Sechelt says work will begin on a realignment of Trail Avenue and the associated storm sewer upgrade on Dec. 9.

The stretch of Trail between Ebbtide Street and Neptune Street is first up, and crews will start moving up Trail from Ebbtide to Surf Circle in January 2020 and then south to Cowrie Street later in the spring. The project is set for completion in August.

In a notice that construction was set to begin, the district said Ebbtide Street may be closed to traffic in front of the new dog park from Dec. 12 to 25 and flaggers will be on site to control traffic.

The improvements to Trail also include a multi-use pathway to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, street lighting, pedestrian-controlled crossings, and decorative crosswalks at the Cowrie Street and Dolphin Avenue intersections.

This $6.058-million project is funded through Development Cost Charges and district reserve funds.

“Council is very pleased that this project is going forward. Trail Avenue is a key corridor in building active transportation infrastructure,” Mayor Darnelda Siegers said. “Our community is an extremely active community and often tells us we need more bike lanes.”
