Sechelt Mayor Darnelda Siegers talks with Seawatch residents Feb. 8, shortly after the neighbourhood was put on evacuation alert.

The District of Sechelt is having security fences installed around the Seawatch subdivision in preparation for an evacuation order planned for Friday afternoon.

An email to residents, signed by Mayor Darnelda Siegers, said, “The fencing gates will be locked at 1:00 p.m. Friday. Keys will be provided to the RCMP and fire department. We are also making arrangements for regular drone patrol of the neighbourhood.”

People living in the 14 homes covered by a Feb. 7 evacuation alert have been moving some of their possessions out of the neighbourhood, but haven’t been able to get trucks in to take heavier items.

The email from the district also said they “are working with our geotechnical expert and a structural engineer to determine if we can provide access. We are hoping to find a way to allow single axel vehicle access into the affected area for a short period of time. At this time, we still don’t know if this is feasible.”

The district is also telling Seawatch residents that Emergency Social Services volunteers will be on hand from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday at the Visitor Information Centre office at the Seaside Centre.
