The provincial government is launching a series of opportunities to help give kids from across B.C. a chance to experience sport events and activities at Olympic and Paralympic venues and training centres in the lead-up to the 2010 Winter Games in February.
Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC Mary McNeil made the announcement on Friday, July 17, at a free skate event at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The events are being supported by 2010 GamesKids, a grant program to allow kids to travel to Olympic-themed events.
"This is your chance to mountain bike the 2010 biathlon course in Whistler, to spend some time learning from the coaches of the B.C. Lions, Vancouver Whitecaps and from our own provincial sport organizations, or even go skating for free at the Richmond Oval," said McNeil. "Whether you're a child or an adult, a spectator or someone who is looking to participate, these events will help bring the excitement of sport and the 2010 Winter Games to all British Columbians."
Sport and community groups will be able to apply to 2010 Legacies Now for grants up to $500 each, specifically aimed at enabling groups of kids to get transportation so they can attend events supported by government.
