Wednesday night at Ted Dixon saw Xenichen Ya Yas face the Blazers in the most dramatic match-up of the women's league season thus far.
While her father Condridge Halloway led the Toronto Argonauts to a Grey Cup in 1983, daughter Jasmine Di Pietro of the Blazers was, to paraphrase Thomas Grey, "a player born to run unseen and expend her speediness in the Ted Dixon air" where she scored five times. Ya Yas were down 5-3 with two minutes remaining but managed to tie the score before the final whistle.
On Sunday, Blazers got back in the win column, with goals from Di Pietro and Emma Wood, as they shut out Fusion.
Gibsons Pigs got a nice goal from Kath-erine Andreas, but Mayhem also got four nice ones, in their 4-1 win at Brothers Park.
All men's league eyes were on Ted Dixon on Sunday morning where first place Halfmoon Bay Sea Kayaks lost 3-2 to unbeaten Sechelt Chiefs.
In this battle of the strikers, Scott Johnson added two more to his tally, while Rick Timothy moved his heavy artillery into position for the Chief's third goal. Halfmoon Bay's goals came from Nate Wade, who got everything on a 35-yard rip into the top corner, and from Marcel Vander Stelt. Ryan Daley was two feet from two goals as he hit a post and crossbar, which had coach Dave "Mr. Sockey" Marsh shaking his head on the sideline.
Coast Progressive United (CPU) beat Sita Selects 3-1 at Cliff Gilker Park.
The game saw great midfield battles, as Selects' towers of power, Matt Pense, Jhoon Rhee and Eric Pinfold, were double checked and snipped at by CPU midfielders. Teacher Barry Krangle found himself being schooled with some foot-over-the-ball by former student Brad Jennens, while Selects' fullback Lorn Campbell was very chatty to CPU forwards until the ball came close, and then it was clobbering time.
Eoin Walker hit two inside the post for CPU, along with a header from Matt Summers. Selects' goal came from Pense's long distance precision chip that was reminiscent of Ronaldinho catching the England keeper of his line in the 2002 World Cup.
The Pender Harbour Bananas travelled from Coast to Coast, but still stayed fresh as they bested Gibsons Pigs United 4-1.
Ian Marshall scored for Pigs United, while Rich Massullo had three for Pender and a single from Brent Sheppard.
