In the women's league this week, Alvina Paul's seasoned Ya Yas taught the upstart Banana Peppers some R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Unlike Aretha Franklin, though, Paul made her point not with sassy hip wiggling and finger wagging, but by running onto a deep pass behind the defenders and tucking it into the corner for the game's single goal.
Ridgepoint Bruins FC came out of hibernation this week in a 4-1 defeat of first place CPU. Ridgepoint got a pair from Eoin '600' Ross, who played as though he'd got a good night's sleep and eaten a proper breakfast, while singles came from Riley McFerrin and Mike Husband. CPU's single was scored by Ken Campbell.
Pender went up early in their match with Ridgepoint, at which point Rod Kammerle decided to assist the depleted Bulldogs' squad, thinking it would make a difference. Bulldogs' speedy 43-year-old wonderkid Eric Sullivan gave them their goal followed by a handspring. The match was a sporting, friendly affair, though afterwards a wincing Michele Macado asked if someone could subtlety and diplomatically ask Ian Dixon not to hug so hard.
For young men of the Sechelt Indian Band, at 30 years of age, they are required to make a difficult decision that has nothing to do with careers, wives or vocations. Similar to citizens of Manchester, who must choose United or City, at that time they must choose whether they will play for the Wolves or the Chiefs. Since there is no open league, after graduation they have 12 years to mull over this decision. According to Amber August at the mall's lottery booth, Wolves are the obvious choice, though Marla August at the Dollar Store begs to differ.
This week's 3-3 tie didn't give any indication which was the dominant power. Wolves went down to 10 men in the second half, and goals came from Dan Muir and Junior Dixon, with a late-game goal from Rich Watson, which he made look elementary The Chiefs got a pair from Kellen Feschuk and a single from Flyin' Ryan Paul.
