For the second straight year, Gerry Webb has come up a bit short in his quest for a Canadian Police Curling Championship.
The Gibsons' curler, along with his Team B.C. of skip Dale Hockley from Chilliwack, Glen Brennan from Summerland and Dean Cross from Abbotsford, lost 6-3 to Manitoba in the championship final on Sunday, April 11, in Timmins, Ont.
Webb was also second at the championship in 2009. But it's not all bad. Including this year, Webb has appeared at the championship 13 times winning in 1985, '86 and '91.
This year's squad was poised for victory after tying Manitoba with an 8-1 round robin record. B.C. knocked off Manitoba 6-2 in the one/two game to advance directly to the final, while Manitoba was dropped down to the semifinal. Nova Scotia beat Ontario in tiebreaker, setting up a match with Saskatchewan in the three/four game, which Saskatchewan won 12-4. Manitoba then blasted their prairie counterparts 8-2 in the semifinal.
"It's disappointing to lose in the final, especially after we had such a good round robin," said Webb. "But we missed a few key shots in the final, and when you do that, you usually don't win."
Webb didn't go home empty handed, however, as he won the all-star award as the best third in the championship.
