The Sunshine Coast Lacrosse Association wrapped up its second season last Saturday as the Tyke squad played host to Vancouver.

The Sunshine Coast Wolverines took on the Ravens in an exhibition contest. The game served as the final one for the association. The rest of the league finished on Thursday, June 24.

Association vice-president Jim Cooper said he was pleased with the season.

"The whole year went well," Cooper said. "We met most of our goals we set at the start of the year. Registration was up from 73 players last year to 114 this year. We played more exhibition games, and I think all the teams showed lots of improvement."

Cooper said he was particularly thrilled with the progress of the Peewee squad who won every game they played this year.

"The players' enthusiasm was very high all year," Cooper said. "I had fantastic turnouts for both our lacrosse nights."

Cooper said next year the association will look at joining zone five, which encompasses the Lower Mainland from the North Shore to Richmond and Delta.

"The goal is to get into more of a regular game schedule," he said. "The exhibition games we did have were great, but they are hard to set up. Vancouver has been very accommodating and helped us to schedule games both here on the Sunshine Coast and down in the Lower Mainland. In order to improve, we have to get in more game action and that means trying to join the league off-Coast."

One thing that was lacking this year were volunteers, something Cooper and the association hopes to rectify at an upcoming AGM.

"We need people to step up and help this league," Cooper said. "We need more parent involvement, more referees and more coaches. Anyone who wants to see lacrosse continue needs to be at our AGM."

Cooper said a date for the AGM would be finalized in the next few weeks.

"This is a great game to be involved with and the sport has really taken off here on the Coast," Cooper said. "If we can get a few more people involved, I know we will continue to be successful."
