TRU Wolfpack wins tournament consolation

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's volleyball team got into the win column for the first time at the 2011 Spartan Holiday Classic tournament in Langley.

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's volleyball team got into the win column for the first time at the 2011 Spartan Holiday Classic tournament in Langley.

The WolfPack downed the UBC-Okanagan Heat in one of the consolation semi finals by a score of 3-1.

Rookie Stuart Richey from Roberts Creek was one of the standouts for the Wolfpack as well as Kevin Tillie and second year, outside hitter, Cagnes Sur Mer showed why he was the CIS Rookie Of The Year in 2010. He had 12 kills and four aces.

Attacking efficiency was the difference in the match. The WolfPack finished the match with 20 per cent hitting the Heat wound up at 4.2 per cent.

"We played better today," said WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly.

"Rookies Richey and Casey Knight (outside hitter, Salt Spring Island, both played well. It was a better team effort."

Knight had eight kills in 22 chances with five digs. Richey had four digs. Tillie was five for six on kills in the first set and had three service aces.

TRU opens the 2011 portion of their Canada West season tonight (Jan. 14) in Brandon.
