It's been a busy few weeks of competition for Sunshine Coast Cycling (SCC) members as riders have competed in a pair of B.C. Cup races and the epic Test of Metal in Squamish.
On Saturday, June 19, riders from around the world descended on Squamish for the 15th annual Test of Metal. The race, which began in 1991 as the Brodie Test of Metal on the trails of Roberts Creek, later moved to Squamish.
Sechelt's Kris Sneddon finished second in the male pro-elite category and second overall in a fine display of riding, which sets him up well for a strong BC Bike Race (see page A?). Gibsons Ruedi Schnyder finished 12th in the male 35-39 division and was 92nd overall.
In the male 40-44 category, Gibsons Glen Illingworth finished 21st and was 105th overall. The race was the 20th straight Test of Metal for Illingworth who sported his 1991 jersey for Saturday's race. In honour of his achievement, he was presented with a lifetime free entry into the event.
Tony Piepjohn of Sechelt, also raced in the male 40-44 category, and finished 70th and 343rd overall. Rounding out the results was Gibsons Sebastian Sleep who finished 10th in the U20 category and 356th overall.
Other SCC members raced on Sunday, June 20 in the B.C. Cup downhill race number four at the Arduum in Mission.
Sechelt's Holly Feniak led the way with a first place finish in junior women with brother Linden finishing second in junior men.
In U17 men, Gibsons Harrison Duxbury-Sleep was third followed by Gibsons Forrest Riesco in sixth, and Jason Teitge from Roberts Creek in 21st. Sechelt's Stephen Bate was 12th in 19-29 citizen men, while Curtis Robinson of Roberts Creek was 16th in elite men.
On June 13 in Burnaby, SCC riders competed in the Cardiac Classic cross country and race number four in the B.C. Cup cross country circuit.
Halfmoon Bay's Katherine Short finished fourth in elite women, while Sechelt's Jessica Marquis was second in junior women. In master men 50-plus, Denys Jones of Gibsons finished ninth; Sue Duxbury of Gibsons was fourth in open citizen two laps; Bob Stanhope of Halfmoon Bay was eighth in open citizen three laps followed closely by Glenn Hafey of Sechelt who was ninth.
In U15 men, Eric Dillon of Halfmoon Bay was second while Liam Hafey of Sechelt was fourth; Grace Stanhope of Halfmoon Bay won the U15 women's event; Louis Dillon of Halfmoon Bay was tops in the U17 men's division followed by Matthew Clough of Roberts Creek in sixth and Jonas Lomax of Halfmoon Bay in seventh.
