The improvement of the Sunshine Coast Special Olympics curling team was clearly evident on Feb. 19 with their second place finish at the annual bonspiel in Abbotsford.
2011 marked the third year of participation for the Coast team, who didn't win a game two years ago, and won only once last year.
Teams played three six-end games with Sunshine Coast winning 6-0 against Abbotsford, losing 8-4 to Surrey (who came in first) and winning 7-2 against Langley.
Derick Pye skipped throughout the three games with Shelley McCuaig, Ted Presley and Theresa Bystedt playing the first three ends of each game, while Michael Brooks, Bruce Stuart and Jordan McCourt played the last three ends of each game. Bill Climie and Marvin Cooney coached the squad.
On the ferry ride home from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, the chief steward announced the results of the bonspiel to the ferry passengers and everyone on the Queen of Coquitlam cheered and clapped. It was an exciting trip, and the local athletes appreciate the passenger passes they received for the ferry from Sport BC.
