The 1919 Chicago White Sox were named the Black Sox because they "fixed" the World Series.
Our Kenmac Midget AA team were named the Black Sox because coach Brian Scarr gathered some black socks and made the team wear them. They entered the Ross Midget tournament in Newton on the May long weekend playing five games and losing only one. Unlike the 1919 Black Sox, this team came to win.
Game one was against Ridge Meadows. Greg Kelley pitched an amazing game and received the game MVP in the 16-5 win.
Game two was against the Newton Rockies. Russ Thorsteinsson was strong at the plate with a double and a single as Gibsons won 12-6. Game MVP went to Zach Ruggles for his outstanding pitching.
Game three was against the Newton Cubs and was a tough one for the Black Sox. Evan Murphy was named MVP as he played a gutsy game behind the plate and even pitched an inning, but Gibsons lost 12-4.
Game four, the semifinal game, was a rematch against the Cubs. Thomas Scarr, Zach and Connor Cross all handled the pitching duties. Connor was awarded MVP for his crushing hits and excellent pitching as the Black Sox won 7-0.
In the championship game, the Black Sox faced the number one team in the Lower Mainland, the Ladner Red Sox.
Zach took to the mound with confidence. Liam Parry, James Duff, Connor Cross and Danny Byers all had huge hits. In front of a massive Ladner crowd, the Black Sox cruised to an 11-4 victory. Game MVP went to Liam for his hitting and great field play.
These Black Sox are truly worthy of praise -and you can surely bet on them.
