More than 90 drag racers, some from the Island and the Lower Mainland met to discover who's best under a sunny sky at Sechelt Airport for the 13th annual August drag races on Sunday, Aug. 14.
Only at local amateur events can spectators enjoy sights like that of world class competitor Cody Munson fighting off an attack by Rob Sheriff's humble VW Beetle in the street machine final. Drag racers from Port McNeil's own track came to do battle and to see their own Chris Sharpe win the hot rod class. The supercharged methanol-fuelled exhibition cars of Chris Egan, Will MacLellan and "Nitro Mike" shook the Sechelt peninsula. See all the results in the sports ticker on page 54.
Meanwhile, children played in the Bouncy castles, and families lined up for food served by Ranger and Pathfinder girl volunteers assisting Lions Club members. Some fans took helicopter rides, and the organizers cleared the track for one scheduled flight to leave the airport. "Busy" best described the day.
From an electric sports car to a high-winged dragster to the Coast's famously fast pickups, there were favourite vehicles for everyone to cheer on. Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association president Tony Petula oversaw a large band of volunteers, some of whom had been casual spectators in the past, invisibly tackling all the chores of running this popular event.
