The third annual Brat (not a race!) mountain bike event was held last Sunday Sept. 25.
More than 70 riders aged 10 to 64 braved the stormy elements to ride the 12-km world-class single track of West Sechelt.
The post-event meal was held at the Old Boot Eatery where riders shared the requisite spirits, pasta and ear-to-ear grins. Stories were traded, new friends were made, and future riding plans were exchanged.
At the end of the day, the event raised $500 for Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue who volunteered their time on the course. These men and women spend countless hours training to be ready to help those of us who get lost or hurt in the backcountry. In fact, many of them are experienced riders themselves.
The Brat celebrates the strength and diversity of the cycling community on the Sunshine Coast. Many participants volunteered in some way to make this event happen. While it is true that we have some talented riders on the Coast, we also have some amazing people who volunteer their time for the love of this sport. From trail building to shuttling to leading rides to coaching youth -these are the men and women of our community.
So, what was the winning time, you ask? Suffice to say, it really didn't matter. What matters is - when we get to do it all over again?
