Tennis enthusiasts are in for a big treat as the Suncoast Racquet Club plays host to Tennismania a celebration of fun tennis, Oct. 1 to 3.

Everyone who loves to hit the ball, from beginners to aficionados, from youngsters to seniors, from those already active in the club to those interested in learning about membership or public play, is encouraged to take part in this three-day open house.

All play is free, as outlined below, but it is requested that players wear white-soled, clean runners on the courts. Club pro, Jacques Joyal will be on hand to give pointers and assistance.

As well as kick starting the fall/winter season, club president Colin Jacobsen said the event begins a month long membership drive.

"It is the cheapest time ever to join the club," said Jacobsen. "There are gold, silver and a three-month trial membership available with discounted initiation fees."

The open house starts Friday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m. when teens, 13 to 18 are invited to play tennis to music. Try a racquet, get a few instructions while some of your favourite tunes blast out; feel free to bring iPods.

On Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the public is invited to drop in for mixed doubles play, meet club members and enjoy this facility that is used and maintained by the membership as well as being available for community programs. The active club recently hosted the national Rogers Rookie Tournament, which showcased a dozen junior players participating in a fun competition.

Sunday's open house runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with free tennis followed by lessons and games for children age's seven to 12 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Halfmoon Bay's Madison Shoemaker who is among Canada's top players in the under-18 category will cap off the weekend with an exhibition match. Shoemaker competes throughout North America and is currently ranked number three in her age category. Come out and see this rising star hit the ball from 3 to 4 p.m.

This is an opportunity for players of all levels - don't be shy if you are a novice - to participate. Come out to play, stay for a barbecued hot dog ($2), introduce your family to tennis and meet the members at this weekend event.
