A local Women's Circle was formed recently with the mission "to provide support to programs and initiatives that empower our community to break the cycle of violence."
On Aug. 15, the inaugural Sunshine Coast Golf tournament will take place at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club in Roberts Creek. Play-golf-give is their motto, and they have a goal of raising $50,000 for the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society to support Together Against Violence programs for women and children in our community who face violence in their lives.
Gibson's Building Supplies has come on board as the presenting sponsor. The event is being marketed as a destination golf tournament as golfers will be invited from off-Coast as well as locally.
Highlights of the day's activities include: a golfer's community breakfast which will be a morning fundraiser that everyone is invited to regardless of if they are teeing off or not; pre-tournament stretch class with golf's fitness expert, Katherine Roberts, author of Yoga for Golfers. An opportunity to spend the night or create weekend packages where golfers and their spouses can enjoy other attractions, events and activities such as the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts and the Hackett Park juried craft fair running the same weekend.
"It is our goal to bring golfers to the Coast during our prime-time season and showcase what we have to offer in its finest form with the hopes that they will return with their spouses and families," said tournament organizer and event co-ordinator Charlene SanJenko. "Once we've successfully delivered on our first year, then we'll look at moving our tournament to the shoulder season next year."
