Pickleball

Most people have never heard of it, but, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America.

This highly contagious, progressive and incurable disease has spread to the Sunshine Coast where more than 160 players enjoy this exciting hybrid of tennis, ping pong and badminton.

Tournaments are popping up all over Canada and the U.S. During the July 6 weekend, the second annual Canadian Open Championships were held in Abbotsford. Six Coasters -Shelley Lawrence, Darcy Lawrence, Lin Buckler, Karen Renfrew, Dave Cudlipp and John Bell - fared well in several categories against some of the best players in North America. Although none of our athletes won a medal, Renfrew and Bell came awfully close, missing the medal round by a game and finishing fourth in the 65-plus mixed doubles division.

Sunshine Coast pickleball is played at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre. If you are interested in joining, email Renfrew at [email protected] or call 604-885-4107.
